A City Unlike Any Other

At the heart of Japan, Kyoto offers a fascinating contrast. You can start the day in front of a centuries-old temple, have lunch at a small spot favored by locals, and end the evening on a lively street lit by lanterns.

As the former imperial capital of Japan, Kyoto boasts an exceptional heritage. But reducing the city to its temples would be a mistake: Kyoto is also a living, young and creative city, where traditions sit alongside modern cafés, artisans, universities and peaceful residential neighborhoods.

Fushimi Inari and Its Thousands of Torii Gates

It's impossible to talk about Kyoto without thinking of the famous red gates of Fushimi Inari.

The shrine unfolds along paths that climb the hillside through thousands of torii gates. The further you get from the entrance, the calmer the atmosphere becomes.

To make the most of the experience, it's best to come early in the morning or late in the day, when the paths are less crowded.

Gion, Traditional Kyoto

Gion is probably one of the city's most iconic neighborhoods.

Its traditional wooden houses, narrow lanes and historic establishments sometimes give the impression of traveling back in time. In the evening, when the lanterns come on, the atmosphere changes completely.

It's a beautiful neighborhood to explore on foot, while respecting residents' peace and quiet and the photography rules in certain private streets.

Arashiyama: Between Bamboo and Mountains

To the west of Kyoto lies Arashiyama, famous for its bamboo grove.

But the district deserves far more than a quick photo among the bamboo. You can cross the river, discover temples and gardens, walk toward the hills, or simply step away from the main streets to find a much quieter Japan.

Setting aside half a day, or even a full day, for Arashiyama lets you appreciate the district more fully.

Tasting Kyoto

Traveling to Kyoto also means discovering a cuisine intimately tied to the seasons.

Matcha, Japanese sweets, tofu, ramen, soba, pickled vegetables and traditional cuisine are all part of the experience. Nishiki Market makes an excellent starting point for discovering different specialties.

But some of the best experiences simply begin by leaving the main avenues to step into a small neighborhood restaurant.

The Best of Kyoto Is Sometimes the Part You Don't Plan

Monuments matter, but the strongest memories don't always come from the places listed in guidebooks.

A conversation with a local, a small restaurant recommended at the last minute, a tea ceremony, a walk through a residential neighborhood, or a temple stumbled upon by chance can completely transform a trip.

It's precisely this way of traveling that we love at GOT A COUCH? — not just visiting a destination, but trying to understand how it's actually lived in.

How Long Should You Stay?

Three days let you discover the main highlights. With four or five days, the trip becomes much more enjoyable: you can slow down, explore different neighborhoods, and spend time in less touristy spots.

Kyoto can also serve as a base for discovering other destinations in the region.

Kyoto Deserves to Be Lived In, Not Just Photographed

Kyoto is one of those cities where it's easy to fill your phone with beautiful photos. And yet its true richness often lies elsewhere: in the silence of a garden, the smell of a small restaurant, an almost-empty street at sunrise, or an unexpected encounter.

So, on your next trip to Kyoto, keep a few hours free of any plan.

You might just find your favorite memory of Japan there.
